Ayutthaya New Directions

After 1932, the power once exclusively the king's was to be shared by three major blocks: government and civil service administrators, the armed forces and a growing merchant class. Through the years the king remained the central focus of national unity and, freed from the daily administration of the country increasingly became the symbol of moral authority. The period immediately following the 1932 Revolution was a fascinating interval of experimentation with various forms of Western parliamentary democracy. Unicameral and bicameral forms were tiled in quick succession, but neither could be readily grafted onto a social organism which had evolved through many centuries of totally centralized control by absolute monarchs. The result was a reversion to more autocratic regimes centered on strong individual leaders, with military backing. Two major figures, one civilian, one military, dominated Thai politics throughout the period. Individualistic, ambitious, fired by dissimilar visions, they shared the common goal of putting Thailand on the path to economic and social development The civilian was Pridi Phanomyong, a brilliant young lawyer; the soldier was Lt. Luang Pibulsongkhram, a young army officer.Pridi gained early prominence when, shortly after the coup, he unveiled a very innovative and highly socialistic plan for economic development. He believed that Thailand could best prosper if national and industrial resources were nationalized and people, with few exceptions, became state employees. Branded a radical, his vision was bitterly opposed by conservative officials and military officers whose subsequent political manoeuvres forced him into temporary exile.A 1933 right-wing attempted counter-coup saw Pibul gain ascendancy, and a year later be appointed to the cabinet of Prime Minister Phya Phahol Phayuhasena, one of the major leaders of the 1932 coup. The exonerated Pridi was appointed interior Minister to guarantee civilian support. Throughout this period each of the two men tried to consolidate a base of power, Pibul through the military and Pridi through the country's intellectual community and, through the foundation of Thammasat University, its students. In 1938, Phya Phahol resigned and Pibul succeeded him as Prime Minister. In conformity with his view that a strongly enforced discipline backed by military strength was vital for Thailand's development he aimed at focusing nationalism to maximum intensity. Pibul continued his authoritarian regime until, in 1941, he was forced into collaboration with the occupying Japanese. Pridi, during the same period, was sympathetic to the Allies and worked with Thailand's underground resistance movement. With the end of World War II, Pibul and his collaborative government fell into disgrace and resigned. In the same year King Ananda Mahidol (Rama VIII) returned from Switzerland, and Pridi became prime minister in 1946. But the unexpected death of King Ananda Mahidol generated mass popular dissatisfaction and once again the tide turned. Pridi was forced into exile, and Pibul again assumed power. This time his period of leadership was to be a long one. It would witness the establishment of parliamentary democracy in Thailand and see the emergence of the country's students as a powerful political force whose protests contributed to Pibul's eventual overthrow. In 1946, Thailand joined the United Nations, viewing it as a forum where small nations might have a voice in world affairs. In 1950, shortly after the outbreak of war in Korea, Thailand announced her support of United Nations intervention and promptly sent a 2000-man fighting force, smaller naval and air force contingents and several tons of rice.

Welcome to Thailand - The Land of Smiles and Cheap Travel .

edit this message at index.php.

Thailand is known as the land of smiles, which is amazing considering the traffic jams in Bangkok. For budget travelers, Thailand simply can't beat on price alone.

Thailand

Thailand is an odd mix of contrasts. It can be extremely stressful while trying to get around in Bangkok and gloriously relaxing while laying on practically any of the beaches that populate the coast of the country. Regardless of the situation, the Thais have a habit and custom or smiling regardless of what you ask or how you ask it.

Beaches

The beaches of Thailand need no introduction. Used as the setting for hundreds of movies, they come in a variety of styles. The beaches of Phuket and Phi Phi fall along the lines of traditional beach resort areas like you might find in a place such as Cancun, Mexico or Tamarindo, Costa Rica. On the other end of the scale, you can find more rustic beach areas in places like the island of Ko Chang where you'll have a few beach bungalows, a couple of bars and one or two stores. If you're looking for a little of both styles, just ask around.

The North

Infatuated with the beach life, many people fail to head up country when in Thailand. This is a mistake as the north is the host to such locations as the city of Chang Mai, the Summer Palace of the King of Thailand and interesting little villages. For the outdoor enthusiasts, rafting, hiking and mountain biking are very popular and widely available.

Prices

If you're on a budget, Thailand is a perfect travel destination. For some reason, flights to Thailand are particularly cheap with my recent flight on Korean Airlines running roughly $650 round trip. Once in country, your money will go a long, long way.

I think a note of caution is need at this point. Please beware. If you decide to take a trip to Thailand, you won't want to come back to your native country. You will, however, definitely come back to Thailand!

Krabi

Krabi, a province on southern Thailand’s Andaman coast, is an almost otherworldly region of labyrinthine archipelagos, where islands seem to erupt vertically out of the sea and secluded beaches are only accessible by colorfully adorned long tail boats. Krabi’s myriad of bays and coves have sheltered pirates, merchants, and sea gypsies for thousands of years and archaeological evidence indicates that Krabi was originally inhabited as early as 25,000 - 35,000 years ago!

With attractions including hot springs, a wildlife sanctuary, sea caves, flourishing coral reefs and exotic marine life, limestone cliffs that draw rock climbing enthusiasts from around the world, and national parks that include the island paradises of Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta, one could easily spend weeks in Krabi and leave yearning for more.

If that wasn’t enough, Krabi features some of the most photogenic sunsets in Thailand, often accompanied by spectacular displays of cloud to cloud lightning, that are best enjoyed from a beachside bar or restaurant.

Meanwhile, with all the tourists spread out among various beaches and islands, life goes on in Krabi Town, the somewhat sleepy provincial capital. Surprisingly few tourists spend time in the charming riverside town, whose hilly streets feature a number of cozy cafes and inexpensive and authentic Thai cuisine is served at an outdoor, riverside evening market.

“Town” to most visitors is Ao Nang, a seaside strip of guesthouses, hotels, bars, restaurants, and souvenir shops that continues to grow as tourist arrivals increase, now spreading north into Noppharat Thara, whose quiet, shady beach is part of the national park that includes the Phi Phi Islands. Ao Nang is the major launching point for boat trips to nearby islands and the isolated beaches of Phra Nang Cape, where the famous former hippie enclave of Railey Beach is located.

Krabi Province, which lies along the coast of the Andaman sea in Southern Thailand, is a top tourist destination as a result of its plentiful natural attractions including, white sandy beaches, crystal clear water, extensive coral reefs, numerous caves and waterfalls, and over 130 islands, including Koh Lanta and the jewels of the Andaman coast, the six islands of Mu Koh Phi Phi National Park.

While not the top destination in and of itself, Krabi Town is a charming provincial capital located along the banks of a river that leads to the nearby Andaman Sea. Consequently, Krabi is an important port city for both local fisherman as well as boats ferrying visitors to the nearby attractions, including Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, and Railey Beach, one of the premier rock climbing destinations in the world.
